Beginner Q&A: my first inspection went sideways

This one's for the new beekeepers: a member story about a first inspection that went memorably sideways, and what they wish they'd known going in. Names changed (sort of).

What happened

First inspection, day after package install. The new beekeeper opened the hive with a smoker that had basically gone out, no gloves ("the videos said gloves were unnecessary"), and a hive tool they couldn't find — so a flathead screwdriver. The frames were glued together with new wax. They forced one apart, dropped it, the queen was somewhere on the wet grass for fifteen panicked minutes.

The bees, importantly, did not sting them. Bees right out of a package don't sting much. The new beekeeper learned this AFTER the inspection.

What helped

• Mentor on speed dial. Apu talked them through the queen-on-grass moment. Queen was fine.
• Lower expectations for inspection #1. You're not actually trying to find anything yet. You're learning the mechanics of opening, looking, and closing.
• Smoker, real smoker. Not a desperate match held over old leaves. Cardboard + pine needles + a few minutes of bellows work.
